The principle Message of the Bible is revealing God's plan of Redemption, to rescue humanity from the power of the evil intentions of a rebellious angel, Lucifer. Lucifer stole the authority of mankind in the earth with the first “trick or treat”. God’s plan of salvation was now to redeem mankind from the traps of free will and disobedience that started with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
God’s chosen people, the Israelites, were rebellious people throughout their history. After God brought them out of slavery in Egypt, He gave Moses the Law, commandments written on stone tablets, rules to live by and learn from. God was again expecting obedience. For a Holy God, breaking even one Commandment made you guilty of breaking them all. It’s not hard see why Jewish people would associate obeying the Law as “pressure” to Work. Pastor Joseph Prince says they were “working” to fulfill the law, “full of labor, pressed and harassed by work” (Matthew 11:28a). Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary labels Anything you do that causes suffering or gets in the way of happiness or threatens to cause distress as evil.
Jesus came into the world to first minister to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, the Jews, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah gathering them: “I was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 16:24). The Gentiles and other nations would not be excluded, however Jesus preached continually to the Jewish people about who He was. The divide between “laboring” to get everything right under the Law and “accepting” the finished work of Jesus Christ, His gift of Grace, continues and remains a choice of free will.
We are released from the bondage of laboring to please God when we accept the birth, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The gift of Grace has made us free from the traps of choosing to labor through life. Dr. Creflo Dollar reminds us that by Grace, we are saved, delivered, preserved, safe from attacks on our soul (Ephesians 2:8). The Grace of Jesus Christ doesn’t depend on our good works – Grace will “produce” good works.
Jesus also let the people know, He did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Thebiblemadeplain.com discusses how the finished work of Christ did not abolish the Law but fulfilled the Law. Jesus lived a life free from sin. And then, He paid the debt that mankind had racked up because of sin. Romans 6:23 tells us, “the wages (earnings) of sin is death”. God’s plan for salvation was fulfilled in Jesus who sacrificed himself for our sin debt, to rescue us from the evil of the world” (Galatians 1:4). The “handwriting of requirements”, the “note of debt”, (Colossians 2:14) which is the record of what was held against us because of sin, has been wiped out. God did this by sending His Son Jesus Christ into the world to die in our place. “He has taken the debt for sin out of the way, nailed it to the cross, defeated the power of sin and death, offering salvation to all who believe” (Col. 2:15).
Pastor Joseph Prince preaches the true mark of a Christian who is under Grace is that he is restful. Restful yet progressing. Restful yet manifesting. Restful yet of good character. Restful yet witnessing. Heb. 4:10-11 says, “Whoever enters into God’s rest, rests from his own works…therefore Let us make every effort to enter that rest….” Pastor Prince leaves us with this thought: “Resting” is the Promised Land of the New Testament!
