Many of you can recall an experience where you had to say, “That was an angel, watching over me.” Psalm 34:7 tells us that angels encamp around us. Hebrews 1:14 says, "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve…..?" A Ministering spirit showed up in Genesis 21:16-19 for Hagar, the handmaiden of Abraham’s wife Sarah. “The angel of God” came to minister to Hagar, who was made to leave her home with her son, Ishmael. Their food and water ran out. She was in deep despair. “…and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What troubles you, Hagar?’…. God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water”.
The prophet Elijah, who commanded fire down from heaven, ran when threatened by Queen Jezebel, killer of prophets. “And he asked that he might die… And he lay down and slept. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, 'Arise and eat.' And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.” (1 Kings 19:3-6)
When Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, He overcomes a battle of wits with Satan. Jesus ultimately wins this battle and Satan leaves Him. Even so, the scripture says in Matthew 4:11, “and angels came and attended him”. Did we miss something? Jesus did not give in to Satan’s tempting offers, yet the scripture says angels came and Attended to Him, after the devil left him. Dr. Dharius Daniels explains it this way: Even Winning will deplete you. If Jesus needed to be attended to, by angels, ministering spirits, what about us?
