Many of you can recall an experience where you had to say, “That was an angel, watching over me.” Psalm 34:7 tells us that angels encamp around us. Hebrews 1:14 says, "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve…..?" A Ministering spirit showed up in Genesis 21:16-19 for Hagar, the handmaiden of Abraham’s wife Sarah. “The angel of God” came to minister to Hagar, who was made to leave her home with her son, Ishmael. Their food and water ran out. She was in deep despair. “…and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What troubles you, Hagar?’…. God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water”.
The prophet Elijah, who commanded fire down from heaven, ran when threatened by Queen Jezebel, killer of prophets. “And he asked that he might die… And he lay down and slept. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, 'Arise and eat.' And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.” (1 Kings 19:3-6)
When Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, He overcomes a battle of wits with Satan. Jesus ultimately wins this battle and Satan leaves Him. Even so, the scripture says in Matthew 4:11, “and angels came and attended him”. Did we miss something? Jesus did not give in to Satan’s tempting offers, yet the scripture says angels came and Attended to Him, after the devil left him. Dr. Dharius Daniels explains it this way: Even Winning will deplete you. If Jesus needed to be cared for by angels, ministering spirits, what about us?
Pentecost celebrates the Descension of the third person of the Holy Trinity, who has the same power as the Lord God and the Lord Jesus. The Promised Spirit, the Holy Spirit, who has come down into the earthly realm, bringing with Him power, for our good, all because of the Finished work and Ascension of Jesus Christ. For three years, Jesus taught His disciples through His words and through His example. The disciples had Authority. But, when, Jesus appeared to them after His resurrection, He told them to wait, to do nothing, until they received Power from on high, until the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:44-49). We celebrate Pentecost because the Spirit of truth from the Father, has come (John 15:26); the Comforter, who will “guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the disciples what they needed, “clothed them with power”, to do the work of the Great Commission: Preaching, Teaching, Reaching. The Holy Spirit is here to give us what We need especially when life has us on “empty”: Renewing, Refreshing, Refueling. Before the Holy Spirit appeared, God provided ministering angels for Hagar the bondwoman, for Elijah the prophet, and to the Lord Jesus. They were “depleted” but not “defeated”. Jesus gave his life to make us acceptable in God’s eyes. Because of that, we no longer have to rely on or move in our own strength and understanding, without help. God tells us to be strong in Him and the power of His might!! (Ephesians 6:10) God cares for us. Pentecost reminds us that waiting allows the Holy Spirit, our Helper, our Comforter, to Move for our good, to renew us with power. Isaiah 40:31 promises “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength”. Our Help is here!
